DirecTV Could Be Moving Away from Satellite TV

DirecTV has started testing the removal of new satellite TV sign-ups in select areas. When people in these trial markets try to order satellite service on DirecTV’s website, they see a notice saying satellite TV isn’t available for their address. The site then points them toward the streaming version of DirecTV instead. Most places can still get satellite service, but these test locations only offer streaming plans right now.

The message shown to users says:

DIRECTV Satellite is not currently available in all areas. Check your service address by entering the ZIP code where you want DIRECTV service. Want the same package without the satellite? Switch to DIRECTV Streaming now by selecting that option.

DirecTV staff say this move isn’t a permanent change but rather a push to get more people to try their streaming service. The company hasn’t said exactly which cities or suburbs are part of the test, but it’s likely happening in places with fast, reliable internet where streaming works best.

DirecTV has lost millions of subscribers in the last decade, mainly from its satellite service. More people are dropping traditional TV and picking streaming instead. With fewer satellite customers, DirecTV is trying to bring attention to its streaming platform, which offers a similar set of channels live over the internet.

Meanwhile, rivals like Dish Network are sticking with satellite TV, even with similar losses. Dish recently invested in a new satellite and says it will keep supporting customers, especially in rural areas where high-speed internet isn’t always available. For people living farther from cities, satellite TV remains a useful option. DirecTV may not fully drop satellite service for now, but if you live in a city or suburb and prefer satellite, you might want to sign up soon in case they stop offering it in your area.
